5 Tips for Writing an Effective Letter for Fundraising
Whether you are trying to raise money for your mission trip or you want to make money to help stranded animals, writing and effective letter for fundraising is likely a big part of your strategy. Charitable organizations use a variety of fundraising letter styles to request donations, but most fundraising requests that come in the form of a direct mail letter follow a number of key rules:
- Address the recipient personally: No one likes to get mail that looks like something junky from a business. Use “I” and “You” in the letter to make a direct and personal connection.
- Highlight the benefits: Yes, you are in need and you are asking for a donation, but the best way to woo potential donors is to highlight what they will receive in return. Will it be a tax break? Or perhaps some free advertising? Showing off the benefits of their gift giving will often compel them to donate to your cause.
- Be clear about what you need: If it’s money that you need for your organization, then make sure to state that specifically. If you are looking for donations that come in the form of other support like school supplies, pet supplies, gift cards from restaurants, or whatever the case may be, ask your potential donor directly about what you would like them to offer.
- Keep it simple: These days, no one has time to read a lengthy, flowery fundraising letter. Make sure that your letter is concise, clear, and is easy to read. Yes, you want your letter to be interesting and to evoke emotion, but you also want to hold the attention of your audience and make them take action after reading.
- Make a call to action: Try to create a sense of urgency in your letter by asking them to act as soon as possible. Also, never forget to include a return address and envelope, or appropriate contact information.
